From the PresidentHello everybody! What a busy start to the year it has been, with Noises Off running in February and our season of Sweeney Todd set to open in April. In just a couple of weeks we will perform one of my favourite musicals - the very funny, yet darkly dramatic Sweeney Todd -The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. See elsewhere in this newsletter for a synopsis and a cast list. As usual, tickets can be purchased on 9771 6666 from The Drum Theatre, Dandenong. We expect to soon decide upon our second musical for the year, our Summer play and our first musical of 2008. We have some very exciting options in mind, so please watch our website for updates! That’s all for now – see you at Sweeney Todd!!! Stephen Oakes, DTC President Noises Off – a wrap upThanks again to everybody who came along to see our summer play Noises Off. It was a bold move by DTC to stage a play in the massive Drum Theatre, but one that paid off with more people coming to see Noises Off than any other play in DTC’s history. A big congratulations must go to the entire production team who worked themselves into the ground to get this very challenging show to the stage. Andrew McCormick as the thankless Production Coordinator did an amazing job, with other special mentions going to Kym Davies and Stephen Oakes for managing to complete the astounding rotating set that looked phenomenal and was a genuine centrepiece for the production. Well done guys. Thanks also to the very talented team of actors. Noises Off was a very difficult play to act in; but clearly a very fun one as well. Everybody on stage did their part and made the show so entertaining. Extra congratulations to Joe Dias for being awarded the ‘Irvine Acting Award’ for his hilarious ‘pants-dropping’ performance of Frederick Fellowes. Noises Off was a real success for DTC and it was a pleasure to be involved with it. Thanks again everybody! Matt Caton, DTC Vice-President Editor’s note: Modesty probably prevents Matt from mentioning his own contribution towards the success of “Noises Off”. As director, he deserves take a lot of the credit, and considering it was his directorial debut, we at DTC congratulate him for an outstanding effort. Well done, Matt! |

2006 Lyrebird awards ceremony. On Saturday 17th Feb, the theatre community gathered for the annual Lyrebird awards. As with previous years, DTC was well represented in the nominations and was confident of receiving a few awards. Amidst the sweltering heat and pretty frocks, DTC managed to claim four awards. Congratulations to the following people · Neil Goodwin (Best director in a musical – Les Miserables) · Mark Doggett (Best actor in a musical – Les Miserables) · Jason Bovaird (Best Lighting in a musical over $30,000 – Les Mis) · Jessie Leigh (Best supporting actress in a musical – West Side Story) A special mention must go to the King of Lights, Jason Bovaird, who won all three lighting categories this year, adding Honk and The Castle - both with Fab Nobs - to his win for Les Miserables. |
