From the President Hi, As this is the first Stage Chat since last year's AGM, I thought I would take the opportunity to say hello and let you know about the make up of the new committee. Firstly I would like to thank Stephen Oakes who has stepped down as President of the Company after two years at the helm, along with Noel Legg Treasurer and Sam Lee both of whom didn’t stand for re-election. I thank them all on your behalf for their contribution to the advancement of amateur theatre in the south eastern suburbs. The new committee is an eclectic mix that will, I’m sure, strive to further the goals of DTC. The committee consists of Michael Banks - Vice President, Victoria Zainal - Secretary; Anne McKay – Treasurer, along with Jason Bovaird, Owen Collier, Kym Davies, Steven Legg, and Stephen and Fiona Oakes who make up the ordinary members. The company
is in full swing at the moment with productions of COSI (21 -
29 Jan 2005) and BARNUM (22 Apr – In closing, on behalf of all here at DTC, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, and those near to you, all the very best for the year to come. We look forward to seeing you in the near future at our productions of Cosi and Barnum, or just call in on any rehearsal night and say hello. Christopher T. Stock President January 2005

Monash Secondary College Theatre, corner of
BOOK NOW! Cosi is a humorous story of a group of people living in a mental institution, trying to put on a theatrical production. Lewis is employed from outside the institution to direct the production. Fresh out of university, he is unprepared for what he is about to experience in the presence of the institution’s inmates. While trying to keep control of proceedings, he is continually frustrated and undermined by the cast members, particularly Roy. Along the way he loses the respect of his friends on the outside who deride his determination to make the production a success.
The main driving force behind the action is Roy, an inmate who is keen to perform his favourite Opera, Cosi Fan Tutte. Oblivious to logistical problems (such as the opera being in Italian and a lack of musical ability within the group), he maintains his enthusiasm and energy for Cosi, except for brief periods of depression. Roy and Lewis, along with inmates Doug, Julie, Ruth, Cherry, Henry and Zac, manage to put together some sort of a production, which is seen as a success, at least in the opinions of those within the institution.
It is the characters though, that the audience is drawn to and we are left wanting to share their success and learn more of their fate.
From the Director Putting together Cosi has been an enjoyable and rewarding process. It would be perhaps amusing to be to be able to say that I can understand the trials and tribulations that Lewis (the director in the play) experienced, but alas, it would not be accurate. The cast has been relatively easy to work with, has been in a relatively sane frame of mind, has been committed to the task and contains an exceptional talent and ability to portray its respective characters.
Cosi promises to be one of DTC’s best-presented plays to date. For the first time we are presenting it in the Monash Secondary College Theatre, instead of the Dandenong Community Arts Centre. The change of venue involves its own set of challenges, but it also has some substantial benefits, both for the production team and for the audience. In particular it opens us up to the possibility of performing before a larger audience than normal, in comfort and utilising the facilities expected in a fully equipped theatre.
The most important part of the show is the
actors and their representation of the characters involved. It has been
a pleasure to work with them all. Bill Irvine is a highly experienced
performer, and his performance as
This show is a lot of fun, and will be enjoyed for its diverse madness as much as it should be for its resemblance to reality. |
